Leanne Leon describes the kitchen style she cooked up for a North Vancouver custom home as “refined traditional, yet casual and comfortable.”

“It definitely has some cleaner lines, but [the clients] didn’t want to go uber-modern. They like softer, warmer, gentler finishes,” she says. Leon and her husband co-own and run E2 Homes Ltd., which designed and built the new five-bedroom, five-bathroom, 5,000-square-foot family home.

Leon kept the kitchen palette bright yet textured by layering white materials, from brick-pattern porcelain tile on the backsplash to shaker-style cabinets, a slatted wood ceiling, engineered-stone countertops and metal pendant fixtures. A charcoal hue on the island, window trim and pantry door—Benjamin Moore’s Cheating Heart—grounds the space and adds soft contrast. Exposed oak beams impart warmth, complementing wood elements and wide-plank flooring throughout the home.

Arched doorways add a touch of traditional grandeur and give balance to the linear and angular elements. “I really wanted to incorporate some arches in the house just to soften it up,” says Leon.

An extra-wide island serves as a multi-purpose surface for food prep, visiting with guests, breakfast, kids’ homework and more. “Chairs and stools were very important for these guys, to make sure everything was really comfortable,” says Leon. Teak-and-woven-leather counter stools from CF Interiors do the trick, and are also easy to wipe down. “They have three younger kids under 10, so we wanted to make sure we were looking at fabrics that were durable and easy to clean,” adds Leon.

The family also entertains frequently, so dual ovens, sinks and dishwashers were a must. A built-in Sub-Zero fridge reveals a glass-door wine compartment, while a tucked-away pantry houses a coffee station and extra freezer.

“It’s an entertainer’s dream kitchen,” says Leon. “It has everything you need to whip up a quick meal, and everything you need to entertain 20 very easily.”
